What’s in Your Makeup Bag? Makeup Essentials Every Beauty Needs

For some people, makeup is that thing they only wear once or twice a year for very special occasions. And then some people can never seem to get enough makeup. No matter where within that makeup-loving spectrum you sit, it’s always good to have a few essentials on hand. Whether you’re trying to get spruced up for a hot date or simply want to make a good first impression for a job interview, here are the beauty products no one should be without.

Mascara

For many people, mascara is an essential makeup product. It can easily help to perk up the eyes and is also the perfect complement to any eye look. If you’re concerned about dreaded raccoon eyes, we recommend investing in a good waterproof mascara. Also, consider whether you want a basic mascara or one that lengthens or curls your lashes to boost volume.

Foundation

Depending on who you talk to, foundation can be a contentious issue. While we’re certainly not advocating for everyone to invest in a full coverage foundation product (unless that’s what you want to do), we do think this is essential that you need in your life. In particular, foundation can simply even out your skin tone and hide or blur minor imperfections.

So, if full coverage sounds too intense, consider opting for a medium coverage foundation. Alternatively, you can also pick a tinted moisturizer. While it won’t offer the full coverage finish of more heavy-duty options, it’s a great solution to give you just a bit of coverage and to keep your skin hydrated.

Brow Gel

Even if you think you’ve got the world’s best brows and don’t need to do more than pluck an errant hair or two, brow gel should be in your arsenal. Brow hairs tend to have a mind of their own, meaning that they can easily get a little unruly. At a minimum, a clear brow gel can be the perfect solution for taming fly-away brow hairs.

Eyeliner

Not every makeup look has to look like you spent all day in front of a vanity mirror. Eyeliner is another of those simple makeup products that can give the illusion that you put more effort into your look than you did. Whether you prefer pencils, gels, or liquid liners, don’t underestimate the power of a good liner look.

Lip Gloss

Similar to eyeliner, lip gloss comes in a variety of textures and finishes. You don’t necessarily need to pick a bold, opaque color. You can opt for a sheer low-luster gloss or go big with an ultra-matte lip. But lip gloss is another makeup staple that can help you look put together even if you’re not putting in a lot of effort.

Sunscreen

This might seem like an odd entry to include in a makeup roundup, but sun health matters. Sunscreen isn’t something that’s only limited to beach and pool days. Everyone — regardless of skin tone — should be wearing sunscreen regularly. And these days, there are plenty of sunscreen-infused facial moisturizers and moisturizing sunscreens that don’t leave a dreaded white cast on your skin. That means that no one has an excuse for skipping sunscreen anymore.
